Loving Your Brain

Loving your brain. I remember what it felt like the first time I “fell in love”. Not only was this “love” all-consuming, I wanted everyone to experience that kind of rapture. As I look at what I now know about the brain, I am once again consumed with a passion that I want to share.   The brain is our everything! Oscar Wilde once said. “…it is in the brain that the poppy is red, that the apple is sweet, that the skylark sings.” This amazing organ that is your brain creates your world; positive or negative, light or darkness. “Your brain is involved in everything you do; how you think, feel, act and interact, and who you are as a parent, child, student, teacher, friend, family member, neighbor, employee, or employer.” (Amen, Daniel G. MD, 1998, Change your brain change your life, Three Rivers Press, NYC, NY)   So, it stands to reason that everything you perceive and experience could be enhanced if it were influenced by a better brain. There is no doubt that our brain effects whether or not: we will have empathy for others; insight into problems; cooperate with our colleagues; admit when we are wrong; or listen to our conscience (among a myriad of other actions).   A better brain means a better life. There is hope for us folks that have been ignoring it, and frankly, tempting fate through: the type of food we consume (the brain uses 20-30% of the calories we consume every day); risky physical activities (wear a helmet when you ride your bike, do not hit the soccer ball with your head); ingest toxic substances including alcohol, drugs, and cleaning and finishing products. I could go on and show you photos of brains that are normal and those that reflect the aforementioned problems. There is hope; the brain can change/transform with commitment by you to “change your brain, change your life”.   We need to take care of this precious organ. If we do we can have a more pleasurable, productive, and longer life; that’s a gift to others as well as yourself.

Sorry about this late response. I am still getting used to the web site. Yes, keep up with your brain health. The brain is a complex and yet delicate organ. There is nothing like a healthy brain. I am in contact with so many baby boomers, and the difference between those that care for themselves, and those that don't is very noticeable. Those who have chosen to "Go Quietly Into The Night", are writing their death warrant.
